This new building was constructed at Amberley Working Museum, on the site of a former quarry near Arundel. It houses a major permanent exhibition representing the everyday public experience of telecommunications through the ages. The museum forms part of the BT Connected Earth project which is also funded by BT.
In order to suit the client’s schedule, the project demanded a short construction programme. Building started during December 2001 and the shell was complete by early April 2000 in readiness for the museum fit out which followed immediately after.
The museum was designed as a modern, industrial style building but of a form and scale to suit its rural environment. It is a single storey structure, with an exposed portal frame, supporting a shallow pitched roof. The walls are a combination of brick and cedar cladding with a feature plinth. The entrance façade incorporates a curtain wall system with cedar clad entrance doors.
