The practice was commissioned to design a new Church hall for the Catholic Church of St. Edward the Confessor.
St. Edwards is a 19th Century Grade II listed building and is located in the parish of Sutton Green, Guildford. Our brief was to design a new Church hall to accommodate a maximum of 100 people. Ancillary accommodation comprises a small kitchen, storage space and toilets.
Entry to the hall from the Church is via an existing octagonal space that formerly served as a baptistery. The new hall reflects this feature in the design of the five-sided bay overlooking the lawn. Direct access is also available from the church yard.
A key objective of the project was for the new hall to match harmoniously with the existing church in its rural setting. This has been achieved by matching the appearance of the church and constructing the external envelope in knapped flint; with stone surrounds to the windows and stone plinths, all under a plain tile roof.
