Surrey County Council awarded this Design and Construct contract to BBF Fielding Ltd and Lacey Simmons to secure a new junior school and nursery suite. The project is located within the grounds of an existing primary school at Chandlers Field, West Molesey.
Working in close collaboration with the school, County Education Department and the County Construction Management Unit, the project team has produced buildings that provide a comprehensive range of facilities. These include seven classrooms, a dedicated IT suite, staff room, multi-purpose hall, library, kitchen and ancillary accommodation.
The junior school is connected to the existing buildings via a glazed link that houses the Head Teacher’s office and a group teaching room. The nursery suite provides a main play area with an adjacent quiet zone. Grouped around this central space are two further quiet rooms, a staff area and ancillary accommodation.
The design of the new buildings was influenced by the need to provide both visual and physical links to the existing school. This has resulted in a rectilinear plan form and the use of traditional external materials, such as facing bricks and interlocking roof tiles. These materials have been successfully integrated with high performance glazing to provide an energy efficient external envelope.
